Movie Maker

A.      Understanding Windows Movie Maker

Windows Movie Maker, or abbreviated as WMM is a simple video editing program, designed for PC owners with little experience to make home videos. Actually Microsoft has introduced this WMM facility in Windows Millennium Edition (Me) some time ago. But that time was still in addition or Accessories.

With this WMM you can do simple video editing and play it through Windows Media Player. Then you can also copy it to a CD and make it into your video collection.
Privileges of Windows Movie Maker are able to work well on digital and analog video cameras. Although WMM is intended to work directly on DV camcorders. But this WMM also supports PCI analog capture cards and USB-based web cameras. This you can prove when installing the DV Camcorder so when you run Microsoft Windows XP it will automatically be recognized and open Windows Movie Maker.
So, Windows Movie Maker is a video processing program or software that is built in from Windows XP. Movie Maker is installed when you install Windows XP automatically. Even though it is a built-in program and not a stand-alone program, Movie Maker is able to be a powerful video editing program. This is inseparable from the ease of use, both beginner and intermediate, due to support from Microsoft that provides updates and additional features on their website.
a. System Requirements
Movie Maker requires certain conditions to be able to run properly and optimally. So that Windows Movie Maker runs well in order to meet several standard requirements, namely:
- Minimal Using Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional.
- Minimum computer capacity of an Intel Pentium III 600 Mhz Processor or AMD Athlon Processor, 128 Mb RAM, 10 Ghz Hard Drive.
- Has equipment to capture audio (to capture audio from external sources), and has DV or equipment to capture analog video.
b. File Type
In Windows Movie Maker it will be saved in the Windows Media file format. But it can also import other files on Windows Media such as importing ordinary files, for example:
- Video files: .asf, .avi, .m1v, .mp2, .mpe, .mpeg, .mpg, .mpv2, .wm, .wmv
- Image files: .bmp, .dib, .emf, .gif, .jfif, .jpe, .jpeg, .jpg, .png, .tif, .tiff, .wmf
- Audio files: .aif, .aifc, .asf, .au, .mp2, .mp3,. mpa, .snd, .wav, .wma
B.      Benefits of Learning Windows Movie Maker
In everyday life sometimes we want to document a memory that we think is beautiful and needs to be documented. The documentation can be in the form of photos, text, or videos (moving pictures).
Among the benefits of editing Windows Movie Maker:
  1. Display more interesting videos.
  2. Being able to make a video clip of an album.
  3. Can display videos with a variety of music.
C.      Some Menus Used in Windows Movie Maker
To start or open this program can be done with the steps as below:
Clik Start - Program - Windows Movie Maker
a. Menu bar and Toolbar
The menu bar is a function commonly used for commands, while the Toolbar to perform commands that are used more quickly.
b. Movie Tasks Pane
Movie is used to help operate commands in making movies. The way to display it is:
v Click Menu View - Task Pane
Contains options to start making movies, such as capturing videos and importing videos, images and audio from pre-existing files.
  • Edit Movie
Contains options used in the film making process. Like watching videos, pictures, audio and video effects, transitioning each intersection of films and pictures, making titles or texts and credits on films. And can also use AutoFilm to make movies automatically.
  • Finish Movie
Contains options that are used to store ready-made movies. For example to be stored on a computer, CD, sent as an e-mail attachment, to the Web or to tape on a DV Camera.
  • Movie Making Tips
Contains help that you can use to supplement common commands in Windows Movie Maker.
c. Collection Pane
Collections can be used to display collections that contain Klips. Collection is on the left side of Windows Movie Maker, ways to display it are:
v Click Menu View - Collections (or use the Toolbar)

d. Preview (Monitor)
Preview function to display clips individually or throughout a project. By using a preview (monitor), you can view the project before saving it as a movie.

e. Storyboard and Timeline
The area for creating and editing projects will be displayed with two views, storyboard and timeline.
The difference between working with a storyboard or timeline are:
Storyboard / timeline
Indicates that commands can be displayed with storyboards and timelines.
  • Storyboard
Indicates that commands can only be displayed with storyboards. Storyboard is the default in Windows Movie Maker, using storyboards to see the sequence or sequence of clips in the project and easily rearrange them if needed. This display also allows viewing video effects or added video transitions.
  • Timeline
Indicates that the command can only be displayed with a timeline. Use the timeline to look back or modify the timing of clips on the project, enlarge or reduce images in detail from the project, record narration, or adjust the audio level, film transitions, title overlays to create subtitles. Display time as hour: minute: datik, like one hundred seconds (h: mm: ss: hs)

D.     The steps to make Windows Movie Maker
a. Import file
Importing image files can be from a hard disk on a computer, network computer, CD or from other storage media. When importing files in Windows Movie Maker, you can import one or several files at a time.
The steps to import are:
  • Click Import Picture in the Capture video section
  • The import menu appears to find the image file that we saved
  • Select the image file that we want
  • Click import
b. Place images to the Storyboard
To place the image, we just need to select the image in the collection and then drag it to the storyboard.
c. Provides separators or transitions
To provide a separator for each image, we must place the transition in the part of the image provided by Movie Maker.
Transition is in the Edit Movie, to give the transition click View Video Transition then select one of the transition models after that drag down place it in the Transition Position. See the picture below.

d. Gives effect to the image
Giving effect on the image so that the image looks more different from the original atmosphere.
The effect is the same as the transition in Edit Movie and the effect placement is also the same, by dragging the effect to place the effect on the storyboard. view image
E.      Strengths and Weaknesses in a Windows Movie Maker
v The advantages of a WMM
If the application supports import facilities, it will certainly be very useful and will be liked by many people. In this case Microsoft Windows XP can be used to import video clips from analog camcorders or VCRs using inexpensive adapters. As an illustration, some of the facilities supported by this process are:
1. Import video clips from digital camera videos
2. Store the entire home video collection on a PC computer
3. Arrange the clips in the order you want them
4. Use the Fade or Dissolve effect between clips
5. Capture still images from video clips
6. Give the title, background music, sound effects, and voice narration into the video.
7. Saving more than 20 hours of video for every Gigabyte of disk space.
8. Make a catalog and organize our videos quickly and easily
9. User friendly
10. Display that is easy to understand
11. Does not require special skills
12. The animation provided is quite varied
13. Does not require specifications & HDD is too large
14. Users can adjust the quality of edits that are done as well as video size restrictions
Weaknesses Windows Movie Maker
  1. Sometimes it is often not responding (whether during export / import / save).
  2. A work program closure occurred while editing WMM
